Citimove Helps You Figure Out What It Will Cost To Hire A Moving Company
May 24, 2005
The booming real estate and rental market means that there will be lots of people packing up boxes and moving this season. But navigating the world of flat rates and hidden fees can be daunting. That's why two Manhattanites create Citimove, on the web at www.citimove.com.
Here's how it works. You start by logging on to the website and submitting a request for a move. That means knowing how many boxes you plan to haul, the exact dimensions of your sofa and any other furniture, and having a detailed explanation of any obstacles the movers may encounter, such as a fifth floor walk-up. You can also specify the size of van you want the movers to use, and even the number of haulers you want.
Putting out a request for bids is entirely free of charge, and your name and address are hidden from view. Once the job request has been posted, moving companies from around the city bid on your job. They detail the size of truck, the estimated number of hours for the move, the number of workers that will arrive at the job, and the hourly cost of additional movers.
After that, you can read consumer reviews of each company written by other people who have used their services in the past. The companies are also scored on their efficiency, courteousness, preparedness and other factors.
For longer distance moves, log on to www.movingscam.com. Started in 2001 by someone who was burned during a move, the website is made mostly of message boards where you can find help on understanding estimates, and even download reports on moving companies from around the country.
There is also a black list of moving companies that the website's users have complained about, along with specific details about why a company should be avoided.
